The BattRestore MDT-01 Battery Unlock Tool for Makita Batteries is a purpose-built diagnostic adapter designed to restore Makita 18V LXT batteries. This tool connects directly to compatible 18V batteries and communicates with the internal battery management system, allowing you to diagnose issues and unlock batteries over a USB connection.
Many of these batteries fail not because the cells are damaged, but because the BMS has entered a protective lockout state. The MDT-01 Battery Unlock Tool provides a non-invasive solution for battery repair, helping restore batteries that would otherwise be discarded.

How it Works
The MDT-01 Unlock Tool slots directly onto compatible Makita 18V LXT batteries and connects to a Windows PC via USB. Using the supplied software, you can access the compatible battery information and unlock batteries that are stuck in the "LOCKED" mode but otherwise fully operational.

Important Usage Information
Please note that this will not magically fix all batteries, it is simply a tool that can help diagnose issues of certain batteries. It is perfect for repairing faulty batteries where the cells have been replaced / balanced but the BMS remains locked.
If a battery refuses to be read properly / unlock, the likelihood is that there still remains an issue with the battery which is reintroducing the "LOCKED" state of the battery.
Some older battery models may have limited functionality; however, most modern 18V LXT batteries are compatible with this tool.

Can this tool fix a Makita battery that won’t charge or shows an error?
In many cases, yes. If a Makita 18V battery is locked due to a software error or protective BMS lockout, this tool can diagnose the battery and unlock compatible models. The battery cells themselves must still be healthy for the battery to function normally after unlocking.
Does this tool require opening the battery or replacing the BMS?
No. The BattRestore MDT line of tools work without opening the battery pack and do not necessarily require replacing the original Makita BMS. It connects directly to the battery terminals and communicates with the internal battery management system over the OBI protocol.
Will using this tool void my Makita battery warranty?
Opening a Makita battery will void the warranty. This tool does not require disassembly, so in most cases it does not involve physical modification of the battery. Warranty policies ultimately depend on the manufacturer, but this method avoids the irreversible steps that normally void coverage.
What types of Makita batteries are supported?
The tool is designed for Makita 18V LXT batteries. Many common models are supported, including BL1830, BL1840, BL1850, BL1860, BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B, BL1860B and related variants. Some older models may have limited functionality.
Can this tool fix a battery with flashing red lights or LEDs?
Yes - in many cases. Flashing red lights or LEDs usually indicate a protective BMS lockout rather than a dead battery. This tool can diagnose and unlock compatible Makita 18V batteries stuck in flashing LED error states, without opening the battery. It will not fix batteries with damaged or unsafe cells or if there is a hardware fault on the BMS that is unresolved.
